Method: Cut-stump
The cut-stump method is an approach that combines physical and chemical control methods and is an effective way of controlling woody invasive plants. It involves cutting down the target plant and then applying herbicide on the stump to prevent regrowth. Removing the top portions of the plant prevents photosynthesis while the stump treatment affects root growth. It is important to apply herbicide to the cut surfaces as soon as possible to ensure effective control.
The cut stump treatment method is effective on almost any size woody invasive plant, including large woody vines.
- Cut close to the ground, leaving a 1-2 inch stump
- Using glyphosate or triclopyr, carefully spray or paint the top of the stump with the herbicide immediately after cutting
- The most critical area of the stump to cover is just inside the bark around the entire circumference
